Movie Review: Overall Reflection

ree

I intended my article to be mainly critical of what I believe to be a huge, missed opportunity in the film Les Misérables– that is the lack of depth and history to the character Javert. The original musical as it goes, has Javert and Jean Valjean locked in a battle of words (and more so swords depending on the rendition) when Javert essentially, casually drops that he’s from the gutter too; this lyric opens up a whole possibility of loopholes in the story as it’s never touched on again, and this doesn’t sit right with me as a game theorist, hence my argument. In writing this article, I’ve had to take a step back and really analyze my writing from the point of view of a temporary Medium (website) critic; I tend to be either too monotonous and heartless in my writing or over emotional and involved, two extremes that don’t pay as a critic. As you know, we received official comments from you and from our peers these last couple of weeks, some of which highlighted my concerns regarding the aforementioned. Simply put, I needed to assimilate my writing to my Medium peers; analysis of the overall film, and relation is what I’ve found to be the defining features of a review, not over analysis or an overly informal tone but something that the reader can relate to, this is what I’ve strived to integrate into my writing.

Across the ever-so-changing document draft for my article (got a comment from peer reviewer Zheng Lian that I needed to focus on the film more and I agree, I get tangled with Javert and the injustice done) I’ve come to see that balance matters more than intensity. If I had more time, I’d lean further into that– keeping my focus on the Javert conundrum but also weaving it into the film’s broader visual and emotional design. It’s about letting the point more so breathe, not overfocusing the review with a single notion. (I should note here that as I’m writing this, I’m actively modifying my actual article to incorporate some feedback)
